At the very roots of weight regulation is the simplest of concepts-to maintain a given weight energy intake must be equal to energy output. If excessive calories are consumed or if the energy expenditure is minimized, a weight gain will result.

Alternatively, a reduction in calorie consumption or increase in energy expenditure results in a loss of body weight. Yet for all the simplicity, an obesity epidemic has swept the nation as many Americans struggle in their attempts to lose weight.
