Assignment - Theoretical Paradigms Essay
Description -
1. Choose one of the theoretical paradigms (Structural Functionalism, Social Conflict Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Feminism, or Critical Race Theory)
2. Watch one of the three videos posted below. Take notes as you watch.
3. Write a 500-word analysis of some aspect of the video from the perspective of the theoretical paradigm or development theory you have chosen. So, what might a functionalist say about this? What might a feminist say about this? How do the issues discussed in the film reflect a dependency theory perspective or a modernization theory perspective. Keep in mind you are not expressing your opinion on the issue; you are taking on the lens of the paradigm you chose. You can disagree with the perspective and still use it to analyze the film. Make it clear in your first sentence what theoretical perspective you are using.
Make sure that you specifically connect your analysis to course material (book and/or lecture) and use at least two sociological concepts in your assignment. You have lots of terms to choose from in the key terms guides for the different modules we have covered.
Concepts are the terms we use in sociology, the mental "building blocks" of sociology. We are learning these throughout the semester (eg. society, global stratification, development, alienation, status, imperialism, etc). Don't simply repeat what is in the video; analyze it. Think critically - what is happening, what isn't happening? What is being said, what isn't being said?
What are the consequences of what is happening for individuals, for the group, for the community?
You don't have to cover everything in the film; no one could in 500 words. The best analyses will probably be ones that focus on something pretty specific they see in the video.
