Osteomyelitis is an inflammation of the bone caused by infection. It is often from a result of an injury. It is generally in the legs, arm and spine.

The route by which the microorganisms reached Mrs. Mendoza's bone is most likely started from the small red spot that developed into an ulcer in her right big toe. The ulcer got infected and unknowingly microorganisms are slowly starting to inflame Mrs. Mendoza's bone. Infection traveled through the bloodstream or spread in the nearby tissues.
Question 3: How would you determine if she has a viral or bacterial infection? Explain your answer.

You can determine if she has a viral or bacterial infection from results from a blood test. Most common and reliable test is a complete blood count. The white blood cell differential which is a part of the CBC will usually determine or tell whether it is a bacterial or a viral infection.
Question 4: What is the underlying cause of the purulent discharge?

The underlying cause of the purulent discharge is from the infection. It may be thick in texture, white, yellow or brownish fluid. Purulent discharge is from a white blood cell that is trying to fight the infection and the residue from bacteria being pushed out from the wound.
Question 5: What microorganism is most likely causing osteomyelitis?

The microorganism that commonly causes osteomyelitis is caused by staphylococcus bacteria. This bacteria is commonly found on the skin.
In the case study the x-ray showed sequestrum. How would you explain what that is to the patient if asked?

I will explain to the patient that sequestrum from x-ray means and shows that a piece of bone has been separated from the surrounding bone during the process from when infection began.

Question 6: Based on your knowledge of pathophysiology and research, what process took place for the bone to become necrotic?

The bone becomes necrotic when the bone does not get any blood flow. It occurs when there is too little blood flow to the tissues. The bone then collapses after a while. The bone can become necrotic from injury, chemicals, or even radiation.
