Problem: Medical History A middle aged Deaf woman has come in with a complaint about recurring migraines. Not feeling comfortable using an unknown interpreter, she brings her teenage daughter to interpret the conversation between herself and the doctor. The daughter interprets all of the doctor's questions into ASL but keeps as close to the way the doctor asks them as possible. When voicing for her mother, she does exactly the same thing, leaving nothing her mother says out of her interpretation. When the doctor asks, "How long have you been having these migraines?" the Deaf patient responds with a detailed history including the earliest migraine she can remember having and how it felt, the frequency of her migraines and how she can determine the difference between a headache and a migraine, where she was when she had her last episode, and why she made the decision to finally come to see a doctor. Several times the doctor tries to interrupt, but decides to be patient and wait for the Deaf woman to complete her answer. Next he asks, What medicine have you been taking for your migraines?
