Patient Profile
R.D., a 47-year-old white woman, was admitted to the hospital with a high fever. Unable to find a source of infection, the healthcare provider does an endocrine workup. R.D. is diagnosed with hyperthyroidism
Subjective Data
- Reports recent job loss because she is no longer able to tolerate work-related stress
- Reports symptoms including fatigue, unintentional weight loss, insomnia, palpitations, and heat intolerance
Objective Data
•Fever of 104° F (40° C)
•BP of 150/80?mm Hg, the pulse of 116 beats/min, and respiratory rate of 26 breaths/min
•Hot, moist skin
•Fine tremors of the hands
•4+ deep tendon reflexes and muscle strength of 1 to 2 out of 5
Collaborative Care
•Subtotal thyroidectomy planned for 2?months later
•Started on propylthiouracil (PTU) and propranolol (Inderal)
