Introduction to Sport & Exercise Psychology

Learning Outcomes:

1. Have an understanding of the broad based concepts and theories from which Sport and Exercise Psychology can be examined;

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the implications stemming from the concepts and theories discussed;

3. Recognize the link between theory, research and applied practice;

4. Understand how to collect, analyse, and report psychological data.

Overview:

You will complete a practical report based onthe performance data collected during thesecond practical session (i.e., Anxiety, Concentration& Performance) in Week 11A.In addition to this, please use the guidance below regarding what to include in each section of your report.

Guide to writing the practical report:
Your report should include the following:

Introduction
The introduction tells the reader why the study has been done. It needs to follow a logical order- remember the idea of an upside down pyramid. You start broad by introducing the topic (i.e., anxiety, concentration & performance), critically review relevant theory/research, and finish specific, with the research question or hypothesis. It is crucial that you convey the rationale for the study in the introduction.

Methods
The methods should be the easiest section to write because you have (or should have!)participated the study. You need to ensure that if you gave the work to someone familiar with the field but not the specific practical session then they could reproduce what you have done. This means that participant details need to be included (in text rather than in a table), measures needs to be stated in situ (not in a separate list) and statistical analyses need to be clearly stated. Do not be afraid to include sub-headings (i.e., participants/sampling, procedure, data collection/measures, data analysis) often they can markedly improve clarity.

Results
The data fromweek 11Ahas been analysed for you andthe necessary output tables for your results section are available on Moodle. You will be required to present the data in figure form and this should be supported by a short descriptive written section. Statistical analysis should be clearly reported. Start with the key finding!

Figures
Ensure that all figures are clear and stand alone. Labels should be appropriate and a key or footnote provided where appropriate. Number all figures consecutively.

Discussion
The discussion section is where you get the chance to discuss the data in context with published research - why does it differ/why is it the same? What mechanisms can explain your findings? Again, start with your main finding. Ensure that you end with a data-based conclusion relating back to the previously stated hypothesis or research question.

Referencing and formatting
Sport & Exercise Science students are requireduse the Harvard referencing format whilst Sport Psychology students are required to use the American Psychological Association (APA) referencing format. In addition to formatting, please use the reference checklist below:
- Have appropriate journals/books been used?
- Do all the sources in the text match those in the reference section?
- Is the referencing in the correct style. See the link in Moodle to the referencing style used at the University.

NB. When quoting theories, models and/or research, please remember to attribute the work/ideas to the relevant person(s). This means putting a reference in the text (authors name(s) and date) and also creating a reference list which goes at the end of your assignment (see the ‘How to Study Guide' on Moodle).
