Biking as a means of transportation has become increasingly popular in the United States. In cities, this makes perfect sense, since not only are gas and parking expensive, but also traffic is increasingly bad as urban environments become more populated as a result of urban renewal. Biking has the added benefits of providing healthful exercise for the person biking while producing little to no environmental impact. But, is biking as a means of transportation realistic in urban environments? Is it safe?

This is a current debate here in New Haven.

After you read the excerpt from Janette Sadik-Khan's new book, "Streetfight," on her quest to reinvent NYC streets so that they welcome not only drivers and buses, but also bikers and pedestrians, explain what you think might be possible for New Haven.
