Homework: Perspectives History & Context of the Text Worksheet

Purpose:

People who work with texts regularly need to write reports that consider the history and context of the text, the medium, and its condition and how it has been preserved or not.

For this homework, you will assume the role of a text-technology audit team. Your job will be to examine the text and submit a report to a team of experts to consider how best to preserve the text moving forward.

Task:

In a group, students will select two items from the archival collections and create a report on it. You will work on this in class on October 16th and will have the remainder of the week to work on it as well. It is due before the start of class on Monday October 23rd.

Your report must include:

I. An in-depth description of the document/text. Be painfully detailed here. Describe its dimensions. How was it composed? What materials went into its production? Is it printed, handwritten, or in cursive? Was it published for the public or was it someone's private document?

II. Reflect on the content of the document. What is it about? Who was it's creator, and is there an intended audience?

III. Describe the condition of the document(s). What damage is there? Is there damage?

IV. What would you propose to an archivist to make sure the document/text stays in good condition or is repaired?

V. Compare and contrast the two documents your group selected. How are they similar? How are they different?

VI. At the end of the report, each student should include a breakdown of what work each group member did on the report. Be specific. Who worked on what section? Who did not carry enough of the workload? This section will be different for each member of the group.
