There are two parts to this task.
A. Complete two(2) elevator pitch responses and two(2) case discussion activity responses, as follows:
• two(2) elevator pitch responses from Topic 6 to 8
• two(2) case discussion activity responses from topic 7 to 11
B. Submit a complete package of your work through Turnitin by the due date.
Here are your guidelines for completing this assessment task.
Elevator pitch responses
Elevator pitch responses involve critical thinking on the question and appropriate professional communication taking into account the context of the elevator pitch scenario.
References are not required and should not be provided.
Case discussion activities
Each case discussion activity has specific questions for you to address. Your response to the case discussion activity must be more substantial than the elevator pitch, demonstrating that you can apply knowledge from the topic in a critical way. There isn't usually one correct answer to the case discussion activities; hence, the scope for critical thought.
References are required: citations within the body of the text, and a reference list. At least two professional or academic references must be included.
Topic 6 Elevator Pitch
Is planning dead?
As a postgraduate student, you are engaging in discussion, debate and critical thought about a host of management theories and concepts. You are asking questions like: does this work? What is the evidence to support the claims made about this concept? Are there alternative ways to solve this problem?
Imagine you are working in a small group, discussing one of the case studies in this subject. You might be doing this online or in a classroom. At one point, a colleague who is also a senior line manager makes this claim:
"I really don't think some of the concepts around planning are helpful. In my industry [pharmaceuticals], for example, the intensity of competition and the rate of technology change, makes it just about impossible, if not plain meaningless, to put too much effort into elaborate planning..."
As you might gather, she is saying that planning is essentially a waste of effort, given the rate of change in the business environment.
It's your turn to respond, and by now you know the drill. In one minute of speaking, or about 130 written words, how would you respond?
Topic 7 Elevator Pitch
Walking both sides of the street
You are a senior manager in a major electronics and appliances retail store. The store has branches across Australia, and in Asia and Europe. Sales have been falling for over a year now. (You can guess why, can't you?) You are attending a board meeting where the problems with the current strategy of the company are being discussed.
"So, customers aren't responding to price matching and they don't seem to care about excellent service, so what now? Just close up shop? I need some ideas, please."
Put your best foot forward! In 130 words, or around one minute of speaking, what is your ‘killer idea' to counter the drift from bricks-and-mortar retail to online?
Case discussion activity: Can you win back online shoppers? <500 words, intext citations required atleast 2 academic references>
Using the knowledge that you have gained from the topic together with additional resources that you locate, answer the following questions:
1. What conflicting values are evident in this case?
2. What advice would you give the Board of Benjy's about a way forward that resolves the values conflict?
3. What management competencies do you believe this case highlights that are important for the 21st century leader-manager in VUCA world?
