Assignment - Visit to a national park

Description - This first assignment asks you to reflect upon and describe any experience you had with nature, wilderness, wild animals, or an environmental issue. Your goal should be to both entertain and persuade:

To entertain, you should provide a clearly written, enticing narrative that contains some background, a chronological unfolding of events, some climax or drama, and some conclusion.

To persuade, your narrative should have some point or message about how you feel about what happened to you and the issues involved in it; you may address these issues directly or implicitly-whichever seems most appropriate.

Purpose - Understand the importance of including specific details rather than simply writing a general description of the experience.

Understand how to use vivid, descriptive language to "show" a particular experience that has meaning.

Provide students with an opportunity to analyze what their experience means by clearly telling (or explaining) why the experience is important.

Guidelines - At its core, this assignment is both a personal story and a personal argument.

As with many stories, start by introducing yourself (the speaker) and the story (the context).

Before you submit your essay to be graded, be sure to ask the "So what?" question:

Why do you remember this story? How does your experience relate to a larger issue? Why should I care?

What makes your experience significant to you, personally? Why do you care?
