What makes bacteria important to the cycle of life?

The name of bacteria itself has a negative connotation. When bacteria comes to mind we tend to think of organisms that are disease causing to our bodies. Why is it that negative organisms who are responsible for diseases such as cholera and tuberculosis needed for the cycle that is our lives? What needs to be looked more clearly into is that bacteria is broken down into several groups- some of which are so important in the process of this life. There is aerobic bacteria which survive and thrive within an atmosphere of oxygen then anaerobic which cannot handle the oxygen and then facultative anaerobes which can live in or not in oxygen. The ecosystem itself depends on these roles of bacteria. How and why is this necessary?
