BEST WAY TO RESPOND TO A DISCUSSION LIKE THIS?
Part 1:
What makes an American is primarily the idea of individuality, freedom, equality, and ambition. Folks are free to have red, yellow, blue, and rainbow hair, tattoo their skin, and dress the way they choose to. These are reflections of our individuality. Our country is based on freedom, and we have fought for equality within our country. The American dream would describe the ambitions of the country. We are driven by capitalism. A stereotype as seen from another country's perspective would possibly be that we are gun crazy. And in reality, it is very mixed between consensus. We are shaped by diverse factors such as race, class, gender, and ethnicity. Given our dark history, the country is still a work in progress, however, we are heading in the right direction by educating ourselves on the truth. My perspective comes from an open mind, absorbing historical facts, and conducting my research.
Part 2:
During the Progressive Era, many reforms were occurring during this period. I believe one of the most important are the Labor Reforms. Child labor laws were introduced, such as the Keating-Owen Act of 1916 which limited child labor. Work-hour regulations and safety standards were also revisited in response to events like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. I believe this is one of the most important to occur because it sets the grounds for better treatment of workers, as well as time off for other activities like election rallies, and political events. People had more time to be informed of the political agenda. Today, a continuing social issue would be that of racial discrimination. Every day, multiple stories per day, you hear of wrongful deaths and treatment of black folks, and minorities. For example, when COVID-19 first started, and the Chinese were being blamed for the spread, the unfair treatment of anyone who was of Asian descent occurred frequently around the country. Racial tensions are high, especially with an upcoming election, it seems the country is as divided as we once were during the "separate but equal" days.
