Part 1: Media scholar George Rodman describes technological determinism as a theory stating "the introduction of every new technology changes society, sometimes in unexpected ways." Baran further discusses this topic in Chapter 1 of your textbook. While you can't prove this theory for every new technology, you are now in a position to affirm or dispute its accuracy with respect to books.

How does Baran define technological determinism? To what extent do you think the theory of technological determinism applies to the history of books? In other words, did books impact society? If so, describe what happened as a result of their invention (HINT: thoroughly discuss the printing revolution, increased literacy, education, the shifting of power, religion, etc.).

Part 2: Shifting gears, you will now focus on literature from your own life. What makes a good book? What goes into it? What makes a bad one? On what basis can we make such judgments? What are the elements that make a book work for one person and not work for someone else? What do you think are the main ingredients that both children and adults look for in a book? In essence, our lives were shaped in part by the literature we loved as children.

Please answer the following:

(1) What makes a good book?

(2) What is/was your favorite book of all time (you can go all the way back to when you were a child!)? You might consider books read to you by relatives/teachers, the first book you read on your own, an important or influential series, or perhaps a religious text.

(3) What made it so special and memorable for you?

Bhagwat Gita is religious text which has had a lot of influence on my life. It is one of the most scared books which is read across religions in which Lord Krishna, an incarnation of God in Hindu mythology, talks to his disciple, Arjuna, in the middle of the battle field about the importance of karma. The Gita has lot of relevance in the life of student and it teaches about the principles he or she should live and act. It emphasises upon the traits and skills it should master in order to lead a simple and a bliss full life. The Gita advocates that at every stage of life there is a Karma associated and nirvana or the truth is attained on completing these karmas. Initially, The Gita was written in Sanskrit language and with the advent of technology ,the works of The Gita, is now available in many languages and translations across the globe.

Part 2: Books are a very important part of mass media, although they play a smaller role with lesser reach when compared to today’s mass media social networking platforms which are so popular with today’s generation and audiences, which prefer everything “on the go.” Unlike the other mass media platforms, books give a permanence to the information and provide in-depth knowledge which is a result of lot of exploration and thought which goes behind producing a book. According to Baran, “as the medium least dependent on advertiser support, books can be aimed at extremely small groups of readers, challenging them and their imaginations in a way that many sponsors would find it unacceptable in advertising-based mass media.” A good book in my opinion is the one which has a compelling story-line with an equally good content, provides information and is a piece of good literature which is written without any pre-conceived bias. Books are the foremost pointers to our present and past cultures and are a source of knowledge for enhancing our personal development at large.

Assignment-2 Part 1: “It is the machines and their development that drives economic and cultural change. This idea is referred to technological determinism.” (Baran, 10 e, Chapter 1). Technology does create new avenues, challenging the present ones, and this leads to changes and adaptations in our existing cultures. It is also of great importance as to how much we let ourselves be controlled by technology or we limit technology as one of the factors responsible for cultural change. There are two school of thoughts on the “The power of technological determinism,” one believes that if we let technology drive us, then the culture that the society one lives-in is out-side of their control and they can exercise least control on the influences that technology exerts in changing the culture. And the other school of thought is that if we choose to use the technology wisely and responsibly then we can control and construct the culture we want. I believe in the second school of thought. Change is inevitable and we need to except changes for a better future because the short-comings of present time leads to changes for future.
