Writing a Literary Essay
This assessment requires you to compare three texts from both the Restoration and the 18th century or the Renaissance. You are going to compare the themes of the work, the authors' styles, and the subject matters of the works and explain how they demonstrate the political, social, religious, or philosophical movements of the period.
Your essay should reflect your original thoughts. To begin, choose the three works you want to include in your essay. Make a chart similar to the following and fill in the details with the works you have chosen.
From your notes in the chart, formulate a thesis statement that summarizes your assertion about the three works and how they demonstrate the political, social, religious, or philosophical movements of the time period. Organize your essay to support your thesis statement and choose quotes or examples from the text to use in your essay that support your thesis. Write your essay.
Your essay should be at least 500 words long. You will be graded on the following elements:
Quality of your thesis statement.
Quality of your introduction: Does it explain the background of your era and elaborate the importance of your thesis?
Support of your ideas with specific examples from the text. (Each major point should be supported by at least two pieces of literary evidence.)
Explanation of the evidence you use to support your ideas.
Strength of your conclusion. Does it restate your thesis and make a final observation?
Overall word choice and proofreading efforts. You will submit two documents to your instructor.
First draft with notes about revision typed in a different color so that I can see evidence that you made revisions and answers to the following questions:
Did your thesis change by the time you wrote your final draft? If so, explain how and why.
What major revisions did you make to your draft? How did they improve your essay?
What did you learn from writing the essay? Did your understanding of the works or period you chose deepen?
