The Executive Branch and the Presidency are presented in Article II of the Constitution. It was meant to be the 2nd most important branch in the government. Yet today, the Executive Branch is the largest, most influential and powerful branch of government, likely on the planet.

The President is widely seen as one of the most important political leaders in the world. Did the founders mean for the head of the American Executive branch to be so powerful? What major moments in history shaped the power and prestige of the Presidency? Is there any one unifying action that has lead to the Chief Executive becoming more and more powerful in the United States?
