You Are What You Eat- A Discussion on Diet
Almost everyone knows they should eat a good mixture of fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy on a regular basis. Most people also know they should limit the sweets, desserts, soda, and other foods with little nutritional value. However, I'm sure we all know someone that likely eats too much of the bad-for-you foods and not enough of the good-for-you foods.
According to Boston Medical Center, almost 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese - and more than 45 million Americans decide to go on a diet each year. While being overweight or obese can lead to many other health concerns, very few people talk about the biochemical impact on the body. Not eating enough of any food group can wreak havoc on our biochemical processes including cellular metabolism, gene expression, and make us more susceptible to illnesses. For example, not eating enough fiber can lead to constipation - but low fiber can also increase the risk of cardiovascular problems and high cholesterol. Check out this article about what can happen if you don't eat enough fiber if you're interested in learning more.
