Short Essay
Requirements: For this essay, you will do a close reading of several primary sources (listed below) from The American Yawp. No sources outside of the ones listed below are permitted. Your essay should be 3 to 4 pages (roughly 750 to 1000 words), Times New Roman font, 12 pt type, and double-spaced. Please follow those requirements exactly.
You do not need to cite the sources, simply refer to the document itself if it's from a court, company, or entity, or if it's written by a person, use their name. If you use a direct quote pulled from the source (try to avoid doing this too much), it needs to be in quotation marks. For instance, you would write (examples from Ch. 3 sources): In Rosa Davis's petition to prevent her enslavement, she says, "I do not wish to reside in chains." or, Equiano's diary tells of the harsh journey where sometimes, "we were flogged for no reason and left without water for days."
Sources: "Jourdon Anderson writes his former enslaver, 1865" "Charlotte Forten teaches freed children in South Carolina,1864" "Mississippi Black Code, 1865" and "Frederick Douglass on Remembering theCivil War, 1877"
Prompt: What do these sources tell us about Reconstruction and what life was like for African-Americans? Focusing on the document written by Frederick Douglass, what are his main arguments and how do the other sources support or contradict his claims? Why is history and memory of why the war was fought so important for Douglass? (do not just summarize the sources, analyze them-see strategies below)
Strategies for Success: When you read a primary source (document or image), take small notes to answer these questions. Your answers will help you answer the prompt above. Who is this source created for, why was it created? What is being communicated on a surface reading/viewing, but digging more deeply, what other information (subtext) is being told? How does this source reflect the historical events of the period? Can you compare or contrast these sources to infer things about each? What seems intentionally absent from the source, or what is not shown, and why?
