Case Study: Jennifer has just received her MBA and is currently working in a leadership role with a manufacturing setting where three of her four subordinates, with whom she must work daily, are male; all four are older than she is. Jennifer gets along pretty well with the three men, but her one female subordinate, Emma, has done less work than the others, produces poor results when she does do her work, and has challenged Jennifer publicly. "We never did it this way before and it always worked just fine" was a typical comment from Emma when Jennifer was discussing changes with her team. Emma seems rather disinterested in her work and waits for the clock to touch 5 pm, so that she can leave work. To avoid confrontation, Jennifer has found herself giving more work to other team members or doing it herself. Jennifer has heard through the grapevine that Emma is related to the Vice President. Jennifer knows that her immediate boss will not touch the situation for fear of upsetting the Vice President.
Question: Jennifer approached you to guide her to successfully lead the team (including Emma). Recommend the various actions Jennifer should take in order to succeed in her role. As per the Situational Leadership Model, what leadership style would work best for Jennifer to handle Emma? Justify your response suitably.
