Question 1: What leadership qualities are required to build and sustain a successful non-profit organization? Identify the core skills/competencies and characteristics exhibited by Rachael and Gail that has led to the success of Farm to School Park County. Why are these skills fundamental to an organization's success?
Question 2:
For any non-profit, there is often a tension between the need to generate revenue and the mandate to execute their social mission. Nonetheless, consensus does exist on the need to avoid becoming dependent on any single donor or organization. In the case of Farm to School Park County
, with many funding sources to consider, Rachael and Gail set out to raise capital from a diverse set of funders. Consider the perspectives of these prospective "funders" for FTSPC and create a one-page report/infographic on the social impact the organization has had in their piloting phase. Attempt to address potential questions and/or concerns in anticipation these "donors" may have before committing to funding the program.
Question 3:
As Gail and Rachael discussed how to build an organization that would survive for the long term, one question was how to keep donors and funding agencies excited in year two and beyond. They also had ongoing concerns about whether the board membership mix was right for maintaining the organization. The conversation then turned to filing for 501(c)(3) status. Given the limited resources they had, Rachael wondered if that should continue to be a priority. (See Exhibit 3 for pros and cons.) Perhaps there were other options that could sustain the organization and its mission. Finally, as their discussion wound down, Rachael asked the question that always occupied her thoughts: "If we're not here, who will do the work?" Identify a course of action for Farm to School Park County's approach to long-term sustainability, either by focusing on :
A. Achieving 501(c)(3) status (Charitable Status in the Canadian context)
B. Building long-lasting relationships with funders or;
C. Expanding the Board of Directors
