Problem

You are a social worker employed in an outpatient psychiatry setting. Your primary role is to provide individual and group psychotherapy to children and youth ages 5-18, and their families, as well as case management and care coordination as indicated. One of your clients is a 15-year-old adolescent male who has been diagnosed with major depression. Per agency policy, the adolescent's parents consented to therapeutic services, and the client himself assented. During one session, your client discloses that he has been using illicit drugs, including cocaine and crystal methamphetamine. He asks you to help him address his drug use, but refuses to allow you to tell his parents about his drug problems

As the social worker, you must decide whether to respect your client's wishes or disclose this confidential information to his parents without his consent due to the nature of the health and safety issues.
