Discussion Post: EDI at Work
We discussed organizational culture and organizational policies, which promote/inhibit Equity, Diversity and Inclusion ("EDI)") in the workplace. The third discussion is intended to you thinking critically about employers' EDI policies and practices and explore how organizations represent themselves with regards to these areas.
The discussion has the following components:
Choose a company and research their EDI statement. These can be found sometimes in Sustainability Reports, EDI pages, job postings, EDI reports, etc.. Be creative with the company selection, don't feel bound to choose a Calgary-based company and/or an Energy or Oil and Gas company. Find a company that you're curious about, want to work for, heard about, a company you know nothing about, a company in an industry you haven't worked in, etc.
In your individual discussion response:
1. Paste the company EDI statement, citing your source.
2. Share your reaction to the statement, consider these questions: what sticks out for you in the statement? How does the statement make you feel? What feels missing from the statement? How is the statement inclusive (or not)? What language is used in the statement? How would you change the statement?
3. Research the company, their organizational vision, mission, values, leadership and board composition, demographic composition, sustainability reports, certifications/indices/memberships (i.e. CCDI, CCAB PAR, Top 100 Employers, etc), annual reports. Once researched, discuss if you feel the company is living their EDI statement. Consider questions such as: what evidence did you find that the company is embodying the statement? How do the company values align with the statement? Do you feel their statement is deep or superficial? Indicate the evidence you found in your research as you draft your response. Remember to cite outside material and use that to explain your response.
