Assume solid waste is to be placed in the landfill 5 days per week. Solid waste will arrive at the landfill at a density of 120 kg/m3. Solid waste will be applied in 0.6 m "lifts" and will be compacted to a depth of 0.3 m. Daily cover soil will be applied to a depth of 0.15 m for the first four days of the operation in any week. At the end of the fifth day, a "weekly cover" layer of 0.30 m of soil will be applied. One week worth of deposits to the landfill (including solid waste and cover material) will be referred to as a cell. You may assume that recycling efforts in Tippecanoe County are such that only 50% of the solid waste that is generated in the County will require landfill disposal. Assume also that only solid waste generated in Tippecanoe County will be disposed of in the new landfill. Based on this information, what landfill area will be required for solid waste disposal in a 1-year period if the solid waste/soil is applied to a depth corresponding to 1 cell (as described above)? Express your answer in units of acres. For perspective, a football field (or a soccer field) has an area of roughly 1 acre.
