Assignment
First, make an advertisement or social media post that promotes a positive and healthy message related to gender, sexuality, or race/ethnicity. Showcase your creativity and communication skills, while also demonstrating your understanding of the impact that sociocultural messages can have on individuals and society.
Instructions:
A. Choose one of the following themes: Gender, Sexuality, or Race/Ethnicity.
B. Use Canva to make an infographic that sends a positive and healthy message related to your chosen theme. The infographic should be visually appealing and informative. Where applicable, the post should use relevant and reliable information. You may use a variety of media, such as images, text, or videos to create your message.
C. In creating the infographic may use an image from Part A of your Sociocultural Project as a template that you transform into a positive message.
D. Ensure that your message is clear and concise and that it aligns with the values of promoting positive self-esteem, healthy development, and/or affirming messages that will benefit society and those who view it. The message of your creation may be direct or more indirect/subtle.
Finally, answer the following questions to demonstrate your understanding of these topics. The total written portion of your responses must be at least 3 pages in length and follow the posted rubric to achieve the maximum possible points.
Question A. Write one detailed paragraph that discusses the message and the potential impact of your infographic.
Question B. Reflecting on the cultural attitudes and sociocultural messages explored in this course and in your sociocultural project, in what ways are race, gender, and sexuality socially constructed? Are there biological factors that may influence their construction?
Question C. What influence have these sociocultural messages had on the social construction of race, gender, and sexuality? What is the significance of the impact of sociocultural messages related to race, gender, and sexuality? Feel free to bring in information from outside research and other readings you have done for class.
Question D. To what extent do the sociocultural images you selected reinforce myths/stereotypes about gender and sexuality?
Question E. What new knowledge or perspectives about sexuality has your sociocultural project, as well as the text and discussions in your class, provided you? How do these issues relate to your life and your own personal assumptions about sexual identity and gender?
