Module - Qualitative Interview Schedule

Instructions. For this assignment you will be gathering qualitative data from one short interview. Interview one friend or family member using the following interview schedule. Be sure to record the interview, as you will need to transcribe the results to a Word document. Make sure to save the file. You will need this transcription for a future class assignment.

Five questions would be a brief schedule for research purposes. For this assignment, though, it will give you enough data with which to work without being cumbersome to transcribe or analyze later in the course. It is often a good idea to chat with the person for few minutes when the recording has begun, in order to test the settings and to help the individual get comfortable with being recorded. It doesn't take very long before most people forget about the recorder.

The theme of the interview is Friendship. Follow the protocol as it is written. Only ask follow-up questions if you a) need clarification or b) the person has not shared very much. Remember, you will have to transcribe the results and that can be time-consuming. Below your transcript, include one summary paragraph with your reflections on interviewing and transcribing. In particular, how did you perform in terms of Lune and Berg's (2017) "10 Commandments of Interviewing"? Did you gain any additional insights from transcribing the interview?

Good luck and have fun! Start with this opening:

"Thanks for taking time to meet with me today. This interview is all about friendships and what people think of as a good friend. Are you okay to talk about this? (Wait for response). Thanks. If you are ready, we'll get started."

1. A good place to start would be for you to think of a particular friend and tell me a bit about how you met.

2. What kinds of things do you do with your friend?

3. How are you a good friend to them?

4. What are some of the most important qualities you look for in a good friend?

5. Finally, is there anything else you would like to add about friendship?
