Topic: Vibrio fischeri is a bioluminescent bacterium. The protein that generates light, luciferase, is encoded in two parts by genes luxA and luxB. A researcher found a strain of Vibrio fischeri that does not generate bioluminescence, so they sequenced the luxA and luxB genes to see if either of them had mutations.

Question a. If the sequences for both genes were the expected number of base pairs, what kinds of mutations are likely to be found and why? What could cause these kinds of mutations (name one)? How could a cell repair these kinds of mutations?

Question b. If the sequence of either of the genes was longer or shorter than expected, what kinds of mutations are these? What could cause these kinds of mutations (name one)?

Question c. The researcher found that the sequence for luxB had 5 base pairs of DNA inserted near the beginning of the sequence. Is this likely to be the mutation that eliminated bioluminescence? Why or why not
