Jax, a 14-month-old was brought to the urgent care by her mother. She had a fever of 103°F, irritability, excessive sleepiness, and a history of ear infections. A physical exam revealed no rash on her body and a check inside her ear did reveal inflammation. Concerned about meningitis, a lumbar puncture was performed for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis.

In order to know what kind of virus caused, what kind of staining and media testing should be used? Please be specific and also indicate if the test is selective, differential, both (selective & differential), or neither (not selective nor differential), and explain why.
