Reading: Davidson & Lyttle, After the Fact: Volume I. Chapter 2: "The Visible and Invisible Worlds of Salem"
Question 1. What do the authors mean by "the Invisible Salem" and "the Visible Salem"? Make sure that you can fit the different historical interpretations of what happened in Salem village in 1692 into these two categories.
Question 2. On page 27, the authors (Davidson & Lyttle) write: "the historian's first task is to take the major strands of the witchcraft affair and see how they are woven into the larger fabric of Salem society." What does this mean? Why is this both important and possible?
Question 3. As you read, keep a record of the different explanations for the Salem witch trials that historians have provided-along with the names of these historians. What kind of evidence do these historians offer in support of their interpretations? Also note: what to Davidson & Lyttle seem to think of each of these different interpretations? Do they support or reject them?
