Homework: Developmental Psychology- Digital Environment- The Exposure of Children to Technological Devices such as AI Devices and the Intelligent Toys Essay
Choose two texts* from popular media which present contrasting constructions of childhood, or child development.
Critically discuss the ways in which these texts relate to relevant psychological theories and research of child development and explore related assumptions about the nature of 'childhood'.
Your essay should include a critical consideration of the potential ethics and implications of these theories, and assumptions for individuals and wider society (the family, schools, communities, nations).
Important information
The texts could include, for example, an advertisement for products aimed at children (toys, foods, activities, academic resources), or it could be an excerpt from a book, film or TV show, a brief news item or information leaflet, or perhaps a historical image/text of childhood in a different time and place, a charity campaign or social media/blog post.
When comparing and contrasting you are advised to choose two texts that are very different from one another, for example, texts from different cultures or countries, or texts that produce very different understandings of development. Use the past examples in the assessment section of blackboard if you would like to get some ideas of how text selection works in practice - remember though, these are selected from a range of band criteria.
These two ‘text' can be anything that you feel represents some of the ideas, controversies, and issues that we have discussed on the module so far (or other issues that you personally would like to write about in your homework). You are welcome to use a ‘text' in any language, if you translate it.
You will need to talk to your peers and seminar lead and elicit feedback about your choice of ‘texts' in your seminars - this is important so you can reflect on your choice in your homework. You are also encouraged to speak to others outside of the sessions and get as much feedback as you can - use Miro board for this so that we can all share and learn as a community
The structure of your essay
This homework can be structured however you wish and should include references and possibly images of the text's you are analysing (if these are available online, for example from YouTube, then please include a link to access them). So if you are analysing a film or longer text, then choose a short section of this, and briefly describe it in the essay (you may also want to include a few screen captures).
When planning your homework, you should consider the following (which might also help you to structure your homework):
1) Briefly describe your texts, including where they are from and who they are produced by (remember though that the essay should not be too descriptive).
2) Think about the reasons why the texts have been produced
3) Why have you chosen the particular texts?
4) What discussions have you had with your peers about the selection?
5) Be explicit (i.e. show clearly in your writing) about the ways both texts are shaped by or show evidence of the psy-disciplines and how these intersect with development.
6) Explore what assumptions the texts make: what kind of development is depicted; what message does the text construct about ‘normality'; what kind of subject or person does the text construct?
7) What kinds of developmental theories or ideas do the texts use and/or produce?
8) How do these texts relate to wider literature and research on your chosen topic?
9) How do these texts relate to your own experiences and expertise?
10) Think about what the texts ‘do': what might be the implications of the texts for children, families, school and/or communities?
Topics you could consider include (but are not limited to):
1) Mental health
2) Learning differences
3) Gender
4) Language
5) sleep
6) Digital environments
7) Disability studies
8) Race
9) Family dynamics
Psychological perspective you might consider include:
1) Behaviourism
2) Psychodynamic theories
3) Cognitive Psychology
4) Constructivism
5) Maturation or evolutionary psychology
6) Humanistic perspectives
7) Feminist psychology
8) Critical psychology
9) Cognitive psychology.
