More specifically, it's about a young Latinx ( Dominican American) women from an immigrant family living in a major city ( New York) in the United States finding her voice. The Critical Lens of Gender and psychoanalytic lens are very active in this story, but so is race as a result of the cultural ethnic background of the family and the author being so important as to why characters like Altagracia ( Xio's mother) act the way they do. The last journal you were given asked you to find a poem in Acevedo's text that connected to you.
