Problem: Freud originally felt as though transference blocked a client from growth, and that it was important to address and overcome transference. To allow transference to fully emerge, the counsellor should serve as a neutral figure (Safran et al., 2019). However, more modern psychoanalysis ascribes to a two-person psychology in which the counsellor also participates in session and in the therapeutic relationship. In this relationship, transference is still identified and addressed, but it is less literal than Freud's belief that the client places onto the counsellor unhelpful feelings that should be attributed to someone else in their life. Instead, counsellors might assess a client's transference within the therapeutic relationship and work to explore if this pattern is replicated in the client's other relationships (Kealy & Ogrodniczuk, 2019). Counsellors would often use assessment measures to identify and explore transference with clients in a cyclical relational psychodynamic approach to therapy.
