From "The Martian" movie:

The crew traveled to Mars on the Hermes, and then transferred into a landing vehicle to descend to the surface of Mars while the Hermes waited in Mars orbit. Once they reached the surface of Mars, they either built the HAB or moved into a pre-existing HAB where they planned to stay for 31 days. At the end of the 31-day period, the crew would board the MAV, which had landed two years earlier, making rocket fuel for the return trip from the Martian atmosphere. The MAV would take them from the surface to Mars orbit, where they would rendezvous with the Hermes and use the Hermes for the return trip to Earth.
