Real World Example

In March 2013, Internet users across the globe faced an unprecedented slowdown of the internet resulting from the biggest cyber attack in history up to that time. Computer systems around the world had slowed or become disabled by collateral damage from the deliberate actions of just one group of hackers set on dismantling the website of the Spamhaus Project, a European spam-fighting group that had backlisted a major spam-hosting site called Cyberbunker.

Spamhaus serves as a clearinghouse of information on illegal spamming and may be responsible for up to 80 percent of all spam that gets blocked. For its part, CyberBunker maintained that Spamhaus continually overstepped its bounds and had unfairly targeted its data storage company in its spam-fighting efforts. As a result of the feud, the cyberattack slowed internet traffic to a crawl for several days.

This event raised a number of alarming ethics questions, including: is it ethical to send spam? And what are the ethics of slowing or disabling the entire internet in order to attack your business rival and make your point? While many serious and damaging cyber-attacks have happened since then, the later attacks were clearly illegal, while the Spamhaus/ CyberBunker incident focused on ethics.

After reading this week's materials, review "Real World Example 15.1" on page 453. Reflecting on the readings (quoting important and relevant textbook materials), answer the following prompts with a paragraph response to each.

(1) How would you define ethics to someone who has not read this chapter? What key aspects of ethics are important to cover in your explanation?

(2) With regard to the Internet battle between CyberBunker and Spamhaus as discussed in the textbook and supplemental materials. Who is ethically right or wrong in this case? And finally, who is in charge of the Internet; that is, who is in charge of its content and for policing unethical behavior? Should someone be in charge? Why?
