That would not really be proving anything specific about the story. We also would not want to say In Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Birth-Mark,' Aylmer kills his wife because he cannot tolerate imperfection. This only focuses on the characters in the story rather than relating it to the outside world as well. The best way we could state a thesis about the theme would be like this: Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Birth-Mark,' shows that humans often destroy the things they love by trying to turn the good into the perfect. I want you to try to do this with A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children.Figure out what you believe the theme is (and there can be multiple themes in the same story), and write out a complete sentence stating that theme, the way I did above. Also, give some evidence to support that as a theme in the story. It can be difficult to put these ideas about the theme into a complete sentence, but this is the type of thing you will be doing in your essay.
