Assignment:
These are the details of the assessment that I have to do:
This task will help you develop an understanding of what it means to conduct ethnographic research, and what can be learnt by applying sociological theories to 'real life.' In this task, you will observe something, photograph it and then think and write about what you observed and recorded.
Choose ONE of the 3 below
1. Presentation of self - getting dressed
What do your clothes say about you? Or, put another way, what do you mean when you get dressed? Might we consider clothing and fashion a language? Do you dress to belong, or to differentiate yourself from others? Is what you wear a completely individual choice, or a product of consumerism and mass markets?
2. Communal rituals - ethnographies of gift giving
Gift giving is one of the few rituals common to almost every culture you can think of. Think about the steps you follow to choose and present a gift. There are also behaviours we enact when we receive a gift.
3. Food consumption and everyday multiculturalism
You might want to say that what you choose to eat is based on what your taste buds tell you tastes good! But by now you know what's coming next... What we eat is inextricably linked to culture. Food is symbolic of a variety of tastes.
Identify a cultural or social event in your immediate environment that you can observe and document. Think about the types of situations that might be appropriate and relevant to the Module 2 focus areas of fashion or the act of dressing, the ritual of gift giving, or food consumption. For example, getting a haircut; having dinner with your friends or family; shopping at the supermarket; attending a festival, cultural celebration or sporting event.
Overview
You will introduce how you understand your chosen scenario using the theory/theories and concept/s from Module 2. The overview should be approximately 100 words in length.
- Explain your application of the theory and concepts from Module 2 to the first image. Your observations and discussion of relevant theory and concepts must total 400 words. For example, this might be 100 words each for 4 images or 200 words each for 2 images. The images need to focus on one event only.
- Explain your application of the theory and concepts from Module 2 to the second image.
- Explain your application of the theory and concepts from Module 2 to the third image.
