Module 1 Media Response: Children's Media Landscape

Context: Children's media-use preferences and behaviors are influenced by multiple factors (e.g., access to technologies, age, cognitive abilities, gender, parental rules, peers, household responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and many others.)

For this media response, I would like you to think about the critical variable of AGE in particular.

The Common Sense Media experts discuss the media experiences of children ages 0 - 8 (CSM, 2017) and examine the media-use patterns of tweens and teens (CSM, 2015).

The recent reports on "tech addiction" indicates teens are too connected with their screens. Furthermore, the "Brain Hacking" news video and "Screenager" documentary suggest that technology companies purposefully create technological features that trigger reward cycles in our brains (which perhaps leads to addictive behaviors.)

Instructions: Within this context of media saturation, how do children's media-use experiences change as they mature? How do your media experiences during childhood compare to those of children today?

(If you are a parent, you can think about your own children's media use experiences.)

What issues should be of interest and concern to those of us responsible for encouraging, monitoring, and shaping the lives of young media users? Explain!
