Did you know that scientists are working to regenerate organs? I highly encourage you to check out this piece: It is amazing work! Since I heard of this research (2008), I have been following Dr. Taylor's work. When that NPR piece was published, Dr. Taylor was at the University of Minnesota. She then went to work at the Texas Heart Institute in Regenerative Medicine. They have a GREAT FAQs page that explores stem cells in a super accessible way to learn about what is and isn't used in this type of research. I recommend clicking on a few of the FAQs that interest you before reading further.
Research on organ regeneration is making great strides and may one day become a reality. Dr. Taylor now works at a company call Organamet Bio Inc. "Our mission is to save lives through increased availability of hearts. Our goal is to make bioengineered personalized human hearts available within 5 years."
