Japanese American Incarceration
Introduction
Japanese-American internment shamefully stained the ideals of the Four Freedoms. In response to Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which stated that people identified as a threat can be removed by federal authorities. This order was used primarily on the west coast of the United States where it was applied to issei (first generation Americans) and nissei (recent immigrants) who were relocated to internment camps throughout the desert west. The Supreme Court upheld the legality of those camps even as the Japanese-American 442nd regimental combat team became the most highly decorated unit in the war.
