Performance appraisals are hard to get excited about on both sides of the equation. The relationship of the parties can make things more difficult as well. In one scenario, the manager is tasked with evaluating another person which they either interact with frequently and directly and will continue to interact with (not so great for giving bad reviews) or in another scenario, an HR manager has to review someone they know nothing about besides on paper.

2 (a) As an employee, how can you overcome defensiveness when receiving a performance appraisal? (b) From the reviewer's perspective, how can you overcome a defensive employee in a performance appraisal?

3. If you were to give a performance appraisal to a subordinate, how would you avoid the issue of leniency? Giving direct, personal feedback on someone's work is much harder in practice than in theory, especially when applied to a person's livelihood.
