VRE stands for Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus, VRE is not a virus but a bacterium. Vancomycin is a powerful antibiotic that is used as a last resort to treat an infection. Resistant the inability of something taking place or withstanding something. Enterococcus is a type of bacteria that resides in the digestive and genital tract. Everyone has enterococcus, which usually causes no problems, but infections can occur. But when infections arise VRE can be resistant to the antibiotic Vanco. These are labeled as superbugs. VRE is developed when a person has long treatments of Vanco or other antibiotics for a long period. Recent abdomen and chest surgeries are a way one can contract this superbug. A person with a weakened immune system is at danger to develop VRE. Patients that are in Intensive Care Units, Cancer wards, or transplant wards are a risk for this type of infection. VRE that is already colonized in one's body will potentially develop this bacterium. These superbugs live on counters, in bathroom, and other hard surface areas. Proper handwashing prevents the spread of this infection along with proper use of gloves when handling body fluids and performing wound care. When diagnosed with Urinary Tract Infections, Bloodstream Infections, and Wound Infections can also trigger VRE to arise.
