Purpose: To gain an understanding of effective teaching and learning in discharge planning in the acute care setting, create a discharge planning scenario.
This scenario should be for an acute care patient requiring teaching before discharge. There should be some evidence of cultural considerations when providing teaching for the patient and the family. Based on the scenario you creates, What is your specific teaching/learning need?
b. What is your teaching plan? i. What do you consider in principles of teaching and learning ii. What do you consider in barriers to learning? Develop a 10 - 15 minute role-play to illustrate effective teaching and learning Role-play to include: 1. One should act as the nurse educator
2. Remainder of group to represent the patient and the family 3. Practice the role play, rotating the roles to allow each student an opportunity to experience the teaching process 4. Develop any necessary teaching props (reading materials, audio-visual aids, demonstration etc.) Presentation
1. Each group will present a brief (2 - 3 minute) overview of their scenario and the identified learning need and potential barriers to learning.
2. Each group will then enact their role-play, determining in advance which students will play each role. Role-play must include all group participants. 3. The rest of the class will thoughtfully and respectfully critique the group presenting. Criteria for critique should include: a. Therapeutic communication b. Respect for cultural differences c.
