Problem: Your principal has just notified you that a student in the school has just qualified for special education services. The principal would like you to develop and facilitate the Individualized Education Program meeting and alerts you that English is not the primary language spoken by the family. You have a week to develop a plan for developing and facilitating the IEP meeting and ensuring the family receives, and understands, the Procedural Safeguards Notice. This is a new experience for you and while you are a bit overwhelmed, you decide it would be a good idea to have a process that you could use again in the future. You spend the rest of the week developing your plan and creating materials. What is your plan and what materials will you use to support it? This problem should include a specific plan for communicating with the student and family particularly in terms of the Procedural Safeguards. It should include how you will ensure they understand the IEP and how you intend to engage them in the process. You can create this plan in whatever format is most comfortable for you (brochure, blueprint, narrative, graphic organizer, etc.).
