Susan Cain: The Power of Introverts
The speaker I chose is Susan Cain and I chose this speech because connects to my personal and also academic experience because she is talking about introverts I consider myself an introverted person, and this also has to do with my public speaking class, because in this class I had to present myself and even do speeches, something I am not used to and casually made me feel bad, but I have learned a lot and now with this ted talk I've seen that it's not so bad being the way I am, it could be very helpful, because as Cain said, most of the people that we consider famous nowadays are introverts too and they still succeeded.
The speaker engaged the audience by giving an example of how she is an introverted person since she was little and still succeeded, she talked about a summer camp she went to with her suitcase full of books thinking it was the normal thing to do, which is an example of what she used to do at home, but at the end, she learned how to be outgoing and put her books away for the rest of the summer. She used what is called ethos, to prove she is credible and trustworthy to the audience, which worked because the audience compromised with the speaker, and I could see in the video how entertained they were.
Her main idea was to demonstrate introverts' talents and abilities to the world, because nowadays people will always minimize introverts, thinking extroverts are the ones with the strength to fulfill their goals in life, but little do they know, introverts are more capable of doing this and more. She is trying to show the world that a combination of introverts and extroverts it's what is needed in the workplace and schools. Cain gave a preview of her main points right after her ethos. She mentioned what introversion is and the difference between introversion and extroversion, also how the belief system implemented in schools and workplaces is affecting introverted people, and how a combination of both is what is needed in the world.
To reinforce her speech, she used an inspiring testimony from her grandfather who died at the age of 94, and was an introvert too but still, made a huge impact in his community. She also used a comparison of what schools used to be at her time from what schools are nowadays. Also, she gave examples of introverted people that are transformative leaders in history like Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, and Gandhi, and also about how Dr. Seuss dreamed up many of his amazing creations in a lonely bell tower office that he had at the back of his house. She also defined what an introvert is and the difference between introvert and shy. Cain also provided citations such as Adam Grant at the Wharton School, Carl Jung the psychologist, who created the difference between an introvert and an extrovert, Darwin, and Theodore Geisel. One of the transitions she made was when she moved from talking about leaders in history to talking about how she loves extroverts joking a little bit and introducing the introverts/extroverts' spectrum. Some of them were: "But know", "Now, if all of this is true, then why are we getting it so wrong", "But then" and "so now, I'd like to share with you" "And so I am going to leave you with three calls for action"
Her conclusion was very effective because she shares what has to be implemented in schools and workplaces so that extroverts and introverts feel comfortable in their way. And also, people need to understand that there is no need to underestimate what an introvert could do because at the end of the day everybody can do and reach what they want in life.
To conclude, for my next speeches, I would like to include eye contact, volume, confidence, and humor, because I feel that with this, I will be able to get the attention of my public without making them feel bored or confused, just the way she did it. Overall, it was a good presentation, I learned a lot about what to do and don't do in my next speech, and it was also very interesting what she was trying to inform, she totally caught my attention.
