Case Study: In Module 6, we have explored how power and privilege are built into our foods and food systems: what we are able to eat, how we are embedded in powerful food systems, and who carries the costs of those. Consider any single drink or other food item you might purchase that is supplied by a large multinational company (e.g., Starbucks, Nestle, CocaCola, Kraft, PepsiCo). This could be any type of soda, commercial coffee, or a fruit juice that includes a grown/harvested component. If you don't purchase drinks, you can instead discuss any processed snack food produced by a large multinational company.

Questions:

  • What is your multinational-produced drink/snack item?
  • What are the main or crucial agricultural ingredients? (e.g., coffee beans for coffee, potatoes for chips, sugar cane in some soda, corn in some soda, oranges in juice).
  • What is/are the likely geographic source of the main or essential agricultural ingredients of your specific item?
  • Taking this into account, whose physical labor is likely producing that source food or its' translation into the food item (e.g., who are the people who physically plant and harvest the beans?
  • What moral issues or concerns might this raise (please respond based on what you learned in Module 6, not your own personal opinion!).
  • More generally: Has the course changed your views on how and what you eat? How and why? What ideas do you think will most influence you moving forward?
