Assignment 1:
Here is the link (attached) and passcode for the ethics case:
INSTRUCTIONS: After watching the video case, please write a 3-5 page reflection paper answering the following questions. This needs to be in paper format, not simply answers to questions!
1. If you were Kathe Swanson, do you think you could report your boss? Why or why not? Would you report suspicions of a fraud if the perpetrator was a friend? Please explain.
2. Do you believe that Rita acted alone and committed the fraud without any co-conspirators?
3. If you were an auditor at CliftonLarsonAllen, do you think you would have been able to identify a phony invoice? Why or Why not?
4. If you were a staff auditor at CliftonLarsonAllen and the City of Dixon was your client, how would you discuss the lack of segregation of duties within the city?
5. If you were to write to Rita in federal prison, what would you ask her? Do you believe Rita regrets her crime? Why or why not?
6. Look up the elements of the fraud triangle. Discuss the fraud triangle in relation to Rita's case. Discuss the internal control weaknesses at the City of Dixon. Discuss internal controls that could have prevented Rita's fraud.
7. What are the three characteristics that distinguish white-collar crimes from other types of crime? Explain how these characteristics are illustrated in Rita's case. Do you think white-collar crimes, such as the one Rita committed, are caused only by individual moral weaknesses or are other factors involved? If other factors are involved, what are they?
8. Can you think of a time in your life when you rationalized an unethical decision? It need not be limited to the workplace; it might be a choice you made in a close relationship, at school, or in another activity. What were your rationalizations? Looking back, how could you have combated those rationalizations in the moment? What are some rationalizations you hear for fairly common unethical choices, like cheating on tests? Can you come up with arguments against those rationalizations?
9. Success is often thought of as the attainment of prosperity (though perhaps less so now than in the past). What problems can arise from this limited definition of success? What better definition of success can you come up with? What do you think the impact would be of living according to that definition?
10. What do you really believe is important in your life? How do you rank order your values? If you believe that your values are appropriately prioritized, what would acting on them look like, particularly in an unethical situation?
Assignment 2:
All CPAs must adhere to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Code of Professional Conduct (Code of Conduct). The Code of Conduct identifies acts lacking integrity and moral character, like discrimination and harassment, as behaviors that harm a CPA's reputation and reflect poorly on our profession as a whole. A growing discussion focuses on aligning the Code of Conduct with the International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants by adding guidelines on "professional behavior."' These guidelines are intended to demonstrate CPAs' commitment to moral behavior in professional life and personal activities. The addition would address a growing number of instances where CPAs' personal choices have brought into question a commitment to our profession's values (e.g., making strong moral judgments and exercising integrity). Examples cited include postings on social media, complaints to others about the job's stresses and pressures, and behavior in social activities in public settings.
Part 1.
What is your initial reaction to the prospect of including personal activities in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Code of Professional Conduct? Explain.
Parr 2
Reflect on your intemship(s) and classes. Have you ever heard someone make a statement or observe someone take an action that reflected poorly on him or her (and, potentially, on our profession as a whole)?' What happened? How did you feel about that person as a member/future member of your profession? Does thinking about this experience change your initial reaction to including personal activities in the Code of Conduct? Explain.
Assignment 3:
You have been working in your internship for seven to eight weeks. As you have come to know, internships require our best efforts to gain knowledge, acquire skills, work with various people, and manage multiple tasks. Most work we encounter in our internships is unfamiliar. Yet, we enter this unknown territory with high expectations for ourselves.
Performance during internships is inextricably linked to full-time job offers, which can add additional stress. Moreover, we continuously receive (albeit constructive) feedback on work performed (e.g., things to change, do again, approach better). During our internships, senior professionals provide feedback daily, which starkly contrasts with feedback provision in our educational experience.
When we think about all of these things as a comprehensive whole, we realize that intemships are complex endeavors with many challenges. You have spent weeks putting forth your very best efforts and meeting those challenges. Now is the perfect time to step back and reflect on and acknowledge some of your accomplishments.
This assignment is grounded in the sentiment:
Accomplishments give you a sense of confidence and encouragement. Cathenne Pastier
Requirement:
Discuss, in detail, two accomplishments during your internship about which you are proud.' In addition to describing each achievement and why you are proud of it, include any initial concems/doubts you had, challenges you faced, and knowledge/talents you brought to bear on the task/situation. Keep in mind that personal growth is also a significant accomplishment.
Assignment 4:
You have reached the end of your internship, or it is ongoing. Either way, this is the last assignment for our class and the end of the Winter Quarter. Congratulations!
Requirement:
Reflect on your expectations before beginning your internship. Discuss, in detail, how your overall internship experience compared to your initial expectations.
