HPI: Mother reports child being treated for anemia for one year without change in status at
another practice. She comes for a second opinion. There are no other complaints
PMH: anemia, treated with iron daily
Allergies: none
Medications: Iron (assume appropriate dose)
Social: good student, physically active, denies smoking, drinking, drugs, sexual activity
FH: mother and older male sibling have a history of anemia
ROS: not contributory
Hemoglobin: 10.2
INITIAL QUESTIONS:
1. What are this patient's differential diagnoses?
2. What tests would you order?
SECONDARY QUESTIONS (open blood work):
1. What is your diagnosis?
2. What type of anemia does this patient have and what is the cause?
3. Would you treat this patient with iron?
4. Are referrals necessary? If so, to whom? If not, justify your answer.
