Alex is working on the following physics problem: A 0.500 kg weight is attached by a rope and pulley to a 0.250 kg cart. Find the acceleration of the cart.

He comes up with the solution: "The gravitational force acting on the weight is 4.9 N, which is the same force acting on the cart since they are connected by a string. This gives an acceleration of 19.6 m/s2 for the cart."

(a) What is wrong with Alex's solution?

(c) What should the correct answer be?
