Louisa's mother was born in Mexico and was brought to the USA by her parents when she was three years old. Louisa's maternal grandfather died of a heart attack when Louisa's mother was five years of age, and her maternal grandmother was the sole provider for Louisa's mom until she died in a car accident when Louisa's mother was 12 years old. When Louisa's mother was 20 years of age, she was granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival, or DACA, which only provided authorization and temporary protection from deportation. The legal situation has caused Louisa's mother to be forced to work jobs that were not always safe for her, with little pay. She was working since the age of 12 and never completed her high school education. When Louisa's mother turned 16, she met José, Louisa's biological father. José was an immigrant from El Salvador and had similar background to Louisa's mother, including socioeconomic status, religion, upbringing, and family values. Because both of Louisa's parents were with limited educational background, limited employment capacity, and almost no family support, many of the jobs that José was able to secure were not legal. About a year after Louisa's mother met her dad, José, she became pregnant with her. While the pregnancy was unplanned, considering Louisa's parents' religion and background, her parents decided to keep her and not to engage in conversation related to termination of pregnancy. Soon after Louisa was born, her biological father, José, was arrested by local police and was sentenced to 15 years in prison to be followed by deportation to El Salvador. Louisa's mother was left as a single mother, caring for Louisa and with almost no resources to support her and her newborn baby. When Louisa turned five years of age, her mother met her current boyfriend, Juan. Juan is a 37 year-old Hispanic male originally from Mexico as well, and had a similar story to the one Louisa's mother had, which is how the two were connected.
