Nikos Itsiopoulos aged 47, is admitted into hospital with polyuria (excessive urine production). Test results indicate that his urine is positive for red blood cells and protein.

1. What is unusual about the urine tests? Describe the structure and function of the part of the nephron that would normally not allow these substances in the urine.
