When guard cells are very turgid, they shrink and release water vapor. Turgor pressure is the pressure of water within the guard cells, causing them to open the stomata. When guard cells are very turgid, they swell and create a larger stomatal opening. Turgor pressure is the pressure of chlorophyll within the guard cells, facilitating photosynthesis. When guard cells are very turgid, they turn brown and reduce photosynthetic activity. Turgor pressure is the pressure of oxygen within the guard cells, causing them to open the stomata. When guard cells are very turgid, they expand and allow more carbon dioxide to enter.
