Betty is a 76-year-old woman who was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis when she was 52 years old. Betty lives alone and drives herself on her own errands. She eats a healthy diet, does not smoke, and does not use recreational drugs. Betty does drink the occasional glass of red wine with dinner, approximately twice a week. Betty has managed her MS with Tai Chi and controlling stress in her life. Last week, Betty had a serious fall and broke her arm. She has been taking Tylenol 3 to manage the pain from the broken arm. This week, Betty has begun to experience muscle spasticity as she is not able to do her usual Tai Chi routine. Betty has been prescribed Baclofen for this problem. Prepare a patient teaching plan for Betty to support her understanding of her new medication.
1. How does this drug work (at the receptor level) in the brain?
2. What is the therapeutic benefit of this drug in Betty (why is she taking it)?
3. How does the drug work for the treatment of MS?
4. What are the risks (adverse drug reactions, potential interactions, contraindications) for Betty associated with taking this drug?
5. What are the 3 highest priority patient teaching points that you would want Betty to understand to ensure that this drug is safe and effective for her? (think about her medical concerns, drug history, and lifestyle here).
